An Elegant Guan Ware Octagonal Vase, Song Dynasty (960 - 1279)

Elegantly potted, of pear shape and octagonal section, resting on a straight foot of similar octagonal shape, rising from a swelling body and tapering to a gently everted mouth, the collar with a double-band of horizontal raised ribs, flanked by a pair of tubular handles, applied overall with a lustrous opaque creamy- brown glaze, thinning to the mushroom colour at the rim,  suffused with black craquelure among finer golden-orange crackles, the foot ring unglazed and burnt to a dark-brown colour in the firing. Bottom inscribed with seal mark in a circular plaque.  18 cm. High.
