A Very Unique and Rare Large Yuan Cobalt Blue and Copper Red Charger, Yuan Dynasty (1271 - 1368)


Of a shallow dish body with a flora petal-barbed rim. The central medallion well-painted in copper red crane among lingzhi clouds, encircled by six cobalt blue panels of various designs and in a radiating pattern, another six copper read ruyi clouds each containing the same design of crane.  The cavetto decorated with composite copper red floral blooms and leafs in reverse white, wavy waters bordered along the outer rim.

The exterior decorated with lappet band. A characteristic ‘heaped and piled effect’ can be seen in the underglaze cobalt blue concentrates in certain areas. This inadvertently gave texture, energy and shading to the design.  The underside left un-glazed revealed the greyish-cream base, with orange-brown and dark greyish firing spots. 45.2 cm wide, Diameter
